interesting failure, easy fix Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Thu, 5 Apr 2007 09:13:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
beautiful spring day, driving the Aero a bit more spirited than usual.
coming out of a curve I accelerate hard and "pop". sudden loss of power. various lights on, TCS, check engine, etc. then "zoom" power comes back lights off, then chug-chug. chug. car stalls I pull off.
first thought: my turn for a failed IDM? I carry a spare, so not too concerned.
try to restart and it fires, kicks over and stalls.
second thought: hmm ... IDM prob ok. if the IDM was fried I doubt it would fire at all. Am I in limp home mode?
restart and runs really rough, no throttle response, I can't "feather" the throttle to keep the engine running. stalls.
third thought: if I was in limp home mode, I would have throttle response of some sort.
so I pop the hood to take a look. There is a nasty smell ... it sure makes me think that the IDM fried itself ... tempted to pop in the spare ... but why would it fire up and try to run if the IDM was bad ...
I pull the engine cover to look at the TB. Everything looks fine .... Sure enough I am not in limp home mode.
by chance I knock into the plastic intake to the TB. it was loose! the pressure from the turbo had popped it off of the TB. I basically had a massive vacuum leak, and sucking in 100% unmetered air. I pressed it back onto the TB and tightened the clamp.
all fixed. started up and ran great.
so I resumed my enjoyment of a truly beautiful spring day.
