John: Saab is one of the first auto makers to come out with Bi-Xenon lights as opposed to "normal" Xenon.
Normal Xenon lights which work only on the low beam are designed to give a very powerful clear beam but with a greater spread to the side of the road / sidewalk for improved visibility of his area. The high beams were left to halogen lights, firstly because the technology was not up the the job viz-a-viz the gas bulbs involved, lenses etc and secondly because of the surface area required.
On the other hand, Bi-Xenon lights are exactly what they say - that is,they work both on the low (as above), and high beam and need a large surface glass area (such as that provided by Saab) to work correctly.
On Saab, the intensity of the beams is controlled by an electronic shutter or eyelid which is linked to the axles, constantly monitoring and adjusting them in order not to inconvenience or blind oncoming drivers. Saab in fact took the manufacturer's original design (being supplied now to makers such as Mercedes) and improved the whole thing by about another 20% or so.
This kind of light system also requires (now by law) a powerful glass cleaning mechanism to maintain the surface area as clean as possible, hence the adoption by Saab of the water jet sprays as opposed to the old wiper blade system. Look closely at the front fender of the new 2002 9-5 and you'll see some "bumps" just below the lights - these house the jet sprays which rise up to work.
