You are correct, it had never been changed! The 1999 and 2000 models were the only ones to use two separate filters; a thin pleated paper dust/dirt filter, and a mesh bag filled with activated carbon for odor adsorbtion.
Starting in 2001 Saab changed to a thicker pleated paper style of filter which has the activated carbon impregnated into the paper media. The only way to remove the plastic frame which supported the original mesh bag of carbon particles is to break into pieces and yank it out. You did good!
No offense intended, but didn't your car smell like a stinky pair of old gym shoes before you changed the filter?
