Today, I completed the installation of SAAB's Bluetooth kit installation in my new 2007 9-5. The following summary and comments apply only to a 2006 or 2007 9-5 without OnStar and without Navigation, the most common configuration.

The information provided is primarily for the owner who intends to do his own installation; the economic incentive is strong. Dealers are getting $300 - $500 for this service...in addition to the $300 plus for the kit itself.

In order to complete the installation you will need the following 4 items.

1. Bluetooth kit (SAAB part no. 32025907)

2. Installation instructions (SAAB part no. 32025872) for the above Bluetooth kit; this is available through IRIS ref. bulletin dtd. 3/12/2007 from the dealer. The book provided with the kit is the Motorola Users Guide...with no SAAB installation instructions.

3. Adapter TEL1 prep (SAAB part no. 32025900). This cable kit will give you a way of interfacing the Bluetooth kit to the car audio system, and powering the Bluetooth kit. Earlier 9-5's included this cable and connector whether the car had OnStar or not.

4. Installation instructions (SAAB part no. 32025908) for the above. The Adapter TEL1 prep kit does not include instructions.

HINTS:

a. The dealer parts department may not volunteer that you need all of the above...because they may not know.

b. Generally, you'll find it easier to install the Adapter TEL1 prep kit first. Then leave the radio, ACC controls, panel below the instrument panel and cigar lighter panel out...and proceed with the Bluetooth kit installation.

c. The instructions state that the battery should be disconnected. Do it. You're wiring to a circuit that is always active. When you reconnect the battery you'll only have to recalibrate the ACC, and reset the clock and date.

d. When you're done you must pair the Bluetooth kit and your cell phone. Read the instructions for both the Bluetooth kit AND the appropriate section in your cell phone User Guide on pairing. Enjoy it; you only get to do it once.

e. On model years 2006 and 2007 you do not need a special tool to remove the radio. Only a Torx bit T25 and a small piece of plastic electrical tape (or equivalent). The Torx bit T25 is to remove the four screws that hold in the radio. The tape is to pull out the 4 small plugs that cover the screw heads, in case you don’t have a screwdriver to gouge them out.

f. When you insert the 3 pins into the back of the connectors (known as K14 and K16 located at the back of the radio) you'll need a very small screwdriver to give them a firm push to seat them fully. You can check for a full seat with a small safety pin by comparing the depth to make contact with the pin, compared to one already installed. Note that pin numbering is on the connectors...you may want to use a magnifying glass.

g. When you crimp on the 3 small pins do not solder. Soldering makes copper wire more brittle and subject to breaking as a result of vibration. This is the reason that stranded cooper wire only crimped is used for automotive applications.

h. If you go the SAAB technical information site to get a copy of the schematic for TEL1 be prepared; the wiring diagram is electronically correct. The wire colors indicated and the connection points are not. I suspect that the schematic and wire coloring is for TEL1 as installed at the factory versus the kit you'll be installing.

CLOSING COMMENTS: The installation is not difficult IF.... you have the 4 items listed at the beginning AND you read the instructions first (perhaps the night before). I'm willing to help via the bulletin board, or if you email me directly.

AND FINALLY: A special word of thanks to Isuzudave. He went through the installation first on his 2007 9-5 Aero....and provided some good targeted help at just the right time.
