Rick...
The confusing is due to the fact that this setting actually serves 2 purposes...
1) The first purpose, which is what everyone on this post has been writing about, has to do with adjusting the "gain" setting between the preamp and power amp to optimally match those 2 separate components. Based on what's been written in the forums and an indirect reference in the manual , it would seem that a value of 24 provides the optimal setting.. Assuming this is true, then anything above 24 will cause the amp to start "clipping" or distorting when reproducing peak signals... Anything less than that value would cause you not to take full advantage of the amps full capabilities.. meaning loss in bass response, dynamic range, etc..
The effect can be very subtle, depending on the type of music you listen to, how well it was recorded, the volume you listen at, etc... You're mpt going to hear a world of difference listening to an AM signal , or older recording, but make no mistake about it, it's valid.. you only need your ears to confirm...
2) The second thing this setting does is limit how loud the volume can intitially play when you turn the system on. So, lets say you've programmed this setting of Startup Vol as 24, Now whenever you shut your system off, it will remember the volume it was playing at, and use that same volume setting the next time you turn your radio back on, as long as the volume didn't exceed the STARTUP VOL setting of 24...
hope this helps
