Went 9-5 shopping last weekend, fun (only 2 2002's though). Had no idea what to expect, so much hubbub over this dash. Well, thought the walnut interior was great, particularly the surfacing and flat finish ;p IMHO, and don't know what ya'll envisioned for this dash, anything more than satin on such an expansive surface would be a distraction and woefully unnatural.
The wood found on many cars is glossy to draw attention - Look at me, this car must be special! As if the wood says anything of the car. Saab, however, has always been largely indifferent to such standards (heck, of anything).
Lastly, FWIW (maybe nothing), until entering this eternal education quest I did a helluva lot of woodworking/cabinet&millwork/a little turning and finished a lot of wood; am not Swedish/no expert, but the feel I get from this finish is very consistent with how wood is treated/utilized in Scandinavia - warm, natural, understated, as they do with even "bright" colors if you can picture that. Anyway, to each his own, but I find the dash both attractive and practical.
