If you chose to change the ATF, a nornmal drain will remove about half of the ATF. The rest is left in the torque converter and lines. There is no filter, but there is a screen that needs to be cleaned.
The recommended change interval for my 1998 900SET is 60,000 miles.
I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF just to prolong the transmission life. I changed the ATF at 5,000 miles; 10,000 miles; 20,000 miles; and 30,000 miles. I am now satisfied that any remaining original ATF is so diluted as to be inconsequential. I will now change the ATF fluid every 30,000 miles.
