The problem started one cold (20F) morning when I noticed the temp gauge wasn't coming up as fast as it should have. It finally made it up to normal but then dropped to cold. It stayed there the entire trip. When I got home I shut off the car, then turned the switch back to on and the needle came up to normal. Same thing happened the next day except this time it threw a CEL -- P0116. I had a feeling it was the thermostat because of the extended warm up, but I replaced the temp sender first since it was cheap and easy to do. Didn't help so I went ahead and replaced the stat. My car only has 35,000 miles so I was kind of surprised that it failed so early, but maybe age is more important than miles with the thermostat.
I also came across this on another forum:
Subject: Coolant Gauge Drops With DTC P0116 Setting in a Saab 9-5
Models:
1999-2005 Saab 9-5 Sedan
1999-2005 Saab 9-5 Wagon
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
CONDITION/CONCERN:
A technician may find an intermittent check engine light on and coolant temperature gauge drops to cold while driving. There are usually no concerns of loss of heater performance, although it is possible. T7 ECM stores DTC p0116 for coolant temperature sensor performance.
RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS:
Have technician replace the engine coolant thermostat. If T7 ECM detects the engine coolant takes to long to heat up, it will set p0116 and MIU will command the temperature gauge to cold.
I assume this was a TSB but I couldn't find it in the WIS I have. Anyone know for sure?
