I bought an '01 Aero manual several months ago and love it. Early last year, long before I ever considered owning a Saab, I did the Saab test drive event that toured the country. I owned an Audi A4 1.8 at the time, and have test driven most mid-high end cars out there, often at driving events put on by Lexus, BMW, Mercered, etc.
No offense to Viggen fans, but when first driving it, I found myself laughing out loud at the crudeness of the drivetrain -- unbelievable torque steer and driveline lash coming through the shifter - it felt as if the whole engine and tranny were shifting in their mounts under acceleration. My overall impression was that Saab should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a crude car - high hp/torque, quick numbers, and good grip mean nothing when the powertrain is so crude.
I drove the Aero next, and felt that it managed the torque much better, as it had a much more solid platform to start with. There was still torque steer, but the overall feel was far more refined. I came away with a fine impression of the Aero.
Skip ahead 8 months or so, and my wife and I test drove the Aero at a dealer and loved it. This was incidentally right after I attended the BMW ultimate driving experience and Ultimate drive, in which I was tossing a 5 series around on an autocross and test driving 3 and 5 series cars on the roads.
The Aero felt wonderful. The BMW engines are nice (2.5 is underpowered), but the torque of the Aero is a rush - fun and addictive in everyday driving.
Cars are about driving, not their numbers. The Aero offers true sports car handling and power in a very luxurious and stylish package at a price far below BMW and Audi.
