Hate to say it but it sounds like you are just holding the nozzleof the high pressure washer too close to the wheels. Spray your wheels with a good quality wheel cleaner prior to going into the booth, and just keep it about 2 feet away from the surface. If necessary, finish up on the wheels with a soft hand wash mitt before rinsing.
Pressure washers can take paint off,let alone wheel weights.I do not know how many cleaning units the typical drive up washer puts out, but suspect it is around 1,000. this is the flow rate in gallons per minute times the pressure, in PSI. I have a home pressure washer that is a 9000 cleaning unit model, and would not even consider using it on a car.It can take paint off wood or concrete.
Others on the board have suggested waxing your wheels when they are perfectly clean, and this seems to make good sense, since the particles of brake dust are adhering to minute imperfections in the surface finish. The smoother the finish, the less that will happen.
