The "Lots of steam from hood." may be the good news Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 06:59:11 In Reply to: Sudden loss of coolant/ antifreeze, JB, Tue, 15 Apr 2008 18:58:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Les has done a good job listing the possibilities. The "Lots of steam from hood." is a good indication that it is not the head gasket.
The suddenness of the problem suggests a ruptured hose; carefully inspect the top radiator hose; it’s usually the first to go due to the greater heat it’s exposed to. If you find that the hose is ruptured, consider replacing the thermostat at the same time; a stuck thermostat can cause a hose rupture, and you won’t know it until you’ve driven around with the new hose for a while….and it ruptures again.
Another, more expensive possibility, would be a rupture of a radiator seam. If that’s the case, research an alternative to an OEM radiator (eEuroparts $387.90 for the 2004 automatic version). Repair at a radiator shop may be an option.
And yes, there are other possibilities. I’ve only listed the couple I, and others I know, have dealt with.
