If you've already driven both, you can skip this. If you haven't, I think once you drive the 02, and if you can comfortably afford the price difference, your choice will be obvious.
The two biggest differences in performance between 01 and 02:
- The new 5sp Auto tranny. Very responsive, particularly in Sport. Great off-the-line performance, very quiet at freeway speeds.
- Improved suspension. The 02 handles better, is more compliant over bumps and is taut with much less roll on corners.
Other factors aside, the 02 simply outperforms the 01 from a driver's perspective. I think the difference is significant. Plus, you get a better (and newer) set of Michelins vs the 01. The cosmetic changes are pretty subtle externally, and the new wood dash in the 02 is a light matte finish vs the glossier deeper red. Totally subjective. I chose to swap for the 01 (at cost) and add other wood accessories (wheel, shifter).
All in all, my first month with the 02 Arc as been a total success with no regrets. You're talking about a premium lux ultrasafe euro sedan for low $30's. What a deal. Probably won't last, the dec discount was $4k, Jan was $3k. If you can swing it, go for it!
