It all depends on your perspective on how nice you want the car to look. If you are really interested in having the best looking paint, hand wash only, and in winter, just use the high pressure spray booths to get the heavy road grunge off. the drive in brushless car washes are fine, and do no damage to a car.
For the vast majority of people, which includes those who drive expensive and premium cars, the normal rotating brush style washes do fine, because they really could care less about how the car looks up close. Fine swirl marks and microscopic flaws are of no importance to them. It just depends what group you count yourself among.
My wife thinks I'm wacko for taking my car to the outdoor high pressure wash in ten degree weather to clean it in the dead of winter, when she just pays her five bucks and lets the machine do the work. When my hands are frozen stiff from being out doors like that, sometimes I think she is right, but will continue to do it this way for now.
