Don't feel bad, I've been working on cars for years and occasionally have to play the find the tool game. Screws and bolts are also good candidates for falling and disappearing into a black hole. B. Millar's advice is good. Chances are that's where it is. The screws holding the cover on are Torx. I can't remember if they're the same size as the DIs, they might be one size smaller.
It's hard to say about the plugs without seeing them. If the ground strap and electrode are noticeably worn down, they've been in there a long time. Compare one you took out with one of the new ones. You can't really tell by color how long they've been in. The color tells more about the condition of the engine and air/fuel mix. A plug in a well tuned engine will have a slightly brown/tan color to it.
