turbo questions

First off, thanks to everyone who gave me feedback while purchasing my '01 aero - 3 months and still in love!
On a road trip 2 weeks ago I was traveling in the flats (85-90mph) and heard this quick blast of air. Sounded like someone hitting an air compressor hose. Noise repeated 4-5 times over 5 minutes. Asked my dealer and he said it was the pressure release valve for the turbo. My question (which likely shows how little I know about turbo..) if you are cruising in the flats with the turbo gauge not even into the yellow area, why would your turbo need to release pressure??
Could cruise control play into this?
Thanks!
