FWIW and FYI. ABS rebuild Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Since recently it has been several posts about the ABS rebuild and we have for a couple of years thought it was the best thing since sliced bread but also read a few posts here and there from people having problems after the rebuilt unit was installed again, throwing codes that was not plausible and never shows up during a regular common break down.
I thought I was going to add another anomality.
I just sent out an ABS module to BBA for a 01 BMW X5. Prior, standard symptoms like no speedometer and several fault codes in other modules listing CAN problems with ABS and missing speed signals was found.
After the rebuild, I plugged it back in and took a test drive. Everything seemed to be fine and speedo worked but when the customer took off, the ABS light and some other lights came back on.
The one code retrieved from ABS was a fault in front/right inlet valve, an unusual code but in line with what I have seen from a bad Saab module and also read over internet.
By recycling the ignition key I could reset the code but as soon as the car started to roll, the code came back.
All 4 wheel sensor were functioning and showing proper speed on the scan tool.
I bit the bullet and ordered a brand new module and when that one was installed, everything was back to normal.
So the consensus of all this is that the rebuild procedure is far from perfected so caution should be kept in mind and take it for what it is, a cheap way to MAYBE rescue a failed ABS module back to life.
If you local Saab shop don't want to deal with this rebuilding option, don't give them grief, they might only want to repair your car as best as possible with as little problem as possible in the future.
