There is an excellent illustrated description of Haldex here.

It seems like a very effective system, provided the software is right. You can program in handling behaviour through use of the the lateral & logtitudinal accelerometers of the DSC system to help determine torque split, along with relative wheel speed and a preferred static torque split given no special situations. I imagine the development work on the maps used determines how 'good' the system is. If the developers want safety & security a la volvo theyll go for a 100% FWD static split, with rear drive kicking in slowly only when front wheelspin has built up to excessive levels, and no torque split variations during cornering to keep lots of nice safe understeer. If the developers want a more sporty setting then the maps just have to be changed to give some rear drive at all times, aggressive tourque swithcing to avoid wheelspin, and use of tourque switching to give nice neutral (or even mild oversteer if provoked) handling - hopefully that is what SAAB will do.
