Since I've never been to Carter, I can't help you there but I can tell you some about Barrier since I'm getting my service done on my '97 9K from them. The hardest thing to get from them is to get a call thru to the service and to make an appointment for it. I've noticed that there's only 2 writers at all times and it seems they are also involved in overseeing works as well which keeps them VERY busy and unable to answer the calls. Peoples are nice there though. As far as quality of works are concerned, I would have to give them a thumb down. I understand that different people are working each time that you take your car for a service but it seems there are so many discrepancies regarding summaries you get. For example, they will give you the reading regarding brake pads(I'm assuming) at services and every time they give me those numbers, they are different! At one point, those readings were larger in later service date than those done in earlier dates. I am no expert of what they do but it seems either thay don't know how to get it or machines are not calibrated or they just don't do it at all! Another one is that when my car was in for warrenty work in my dash, they actually broke the screw inside the dash and didn't tell me about it! I had to point it out to get it right! They must think I'm pretty stupid and don't know my car - what they don't know is that I know my 9K inside and out very well since it is my second one. That said, I know Carter will not offer you a loaner unless you bought your car from them, not to mention it is tough to even get an appointment for service(at least when I called them), not to mention they were not helpful at all. I guess since Barrier has its own dedicated SAAB service area(I don't know if Carter does), it's much easier to get an appointment once you get thru to them (usually within a week). What I would do is to visit the service area and look around and talk to them but don't let them know what you are doing - see how they treat you and what it looks like. Hope it helps - if you need more info about Barrier, let me know.
