Serpentine center idler pulley, to use or not to use?

My 1999 9-5 Low pressure sedan Auto with 144K failed another belt. This time caused by a seized idler pulley. A couple yars ago when I bought the car, the belt broke and I was advised to replace the rear idler pulley 4356127 and the tensioner & pulley assembly but to get the shorter belt and bypass the center idler 4752960 due to how difficult is is to replace the pulley. This worked but there was an increase in vibration and I wonder if it is due to bypassing the center idler. The elimination causes the belt to span a longer distance (vibration?) and the rear idler pulley is smaller than the center idler which means it has a faster RPM which may cause premature bearing failure. Today, I am trying to replace the center idler along with the other and I assume it is held in with the same 6mm hex bolt but the wrench that I cut off that fits into my rear idler won't go into the center. So I cut a 7/32 (about 5.5mm) and it also won't go in. Maybe the bolt head socket is messed up (hard to see) but before I get my mini cutoff tool and cut the next smaller wrench, I am hoping for advise. Thanks much, ToddH
