The paint probably came off. It is a very common problem. I do them under warranty all the time.
Unlike the 9-3 and 900, this one doesn,t just "pop" off. It is held on by double-sided foam tape. It can be a PIA to get off. I use a heat gun and a plastic scraper to get it off. Then I use bug and tar remover and the scraper to get the rest of the foam off the hood.
Putting it on can be a bit tricky as well. There are alignment pins, but they very short. You almost touch the tape to the hood before they work.
