I just wanted to write for those that might search for this later that I have gone through a couple of these but finally figured out something that worked for me.
I bought another one of these used because the part new is a total rip off. I found this on eBay used for US$14 shipped from some U.K. seller. The problem as others have mentioned is that these get brittle with age so used ones generally don't last long.
So this time after purchasing one of these used I took a hot glue gun (something that works very well on plastic when cosmetics aren't an issue) and with a thin amount of the rubbery glue reinforced vulnerable areas at the point where the back of the trim ring meets the barrel of the switch.
After the glue dried, I cut off the globs that would prevent the switch from fitting back in. The trim ring and switch in general feels a lot stronger than it did. Something to try.
