The SID is held in place by friction. The complicated way to remove it is to push from behind, you reach it either by removing the glove compartment or the audio unit. The simpler way is to make two tools from some stiff piece of platic/nylon/glas fibre sheets. "Grab" the sides of the SID and pull without bending against the panel. The wood panel is fragile. The same method works for the ACC panel.
I don't know if the SID is easy to repair, but from what I have heard the problem with the missing lines originates in the flexible cable that connects the display to the circuit board. I have not opened my SID as I haven't had the missing lines problem (my 1999).
