The new A4 did much better in EuroNcap crash testing
and should be somewhat safer then a current 9-3 and a little
less safe then a 9-5. The new A4 is much safer then the
new 3 series from BMW.
As a FWD car the current A4 is much better then the old A4
and also better then a current 9-3.
The Quattro system is again the good old one, thus the
heavy understeer combined with sideways slides over its 4 wheels
is again there like in all real Quattro cars. But now
ESP hides it at its limits which is a good thing for
the average driver. Less so when you talk performance.
The new 3.0L 30V engine is not what one could call
a great engine. The first engines in the New A4 had
a tendency to overheat and seize if run at high RPM
for long periods of time. Audi did not fix this at all,
what they did was a modified ECU that reduces output
should the engine get too warm on the already produced
cars. The ones they build now have a modified cooling
system plus a new ECU that has the same effect, but
less noticable. The derivate 3.2L 30V engine that was supposed
to go into the NEW S3 and TT(s) was droped as it could
not meet the 300HP demanded from it, in the end it AUDI
might make a 3.2L engine that will produce around 250HP
for the new S3... but now they think that they will
use the 1.8T engine instead in a 250HP version.
I would say that the main improvement is comfort
and crash safety. The rest remained like before
just with new engines and stuff. The A6 like
trunk creates uplift at high speeds like
on the A6, but its not as bad as on early TTs.
If you do get one... avoid the 3.0L 30V and the
2.5L TDI, the other engines are OK.
BTW friend of mine has a AUDI Coupe Conv. Car is
7 years old and faling apart, real bad, each month
something goes bad. He ordered himself a Boxster and
can'd wait to get it and rid of the AUDI. The local
AUDI dealer has 5 TTs for sale, all second hand, the
TT is a major lemon and people keep selling theirs
here. Wait 2 years and see how people will sell em
in the US.
If you like it, buy one or look at the Volvo S60
and the 9-5 which are similar in price.

Coolknight
