Lou and Hammer,
If you guys feel more comfortable sticking with the Saab branded filter, then please do so. There's nothing wrong with that choice. However, if you adhere to the strict mantra that "Saab knows best", then you should never use ANY non-OEM parts. That means using Saab-brand oil, Michelin tires, etc. Again, there's nothing wrong with that, but I think manufacturers have to make their outsourced part selections based on a variety of criteria which may not all apply to the consumer. For example, why did Saab switch from Mann to ACDelco as their filter supplier? I doubt that the decision was based on filter performance. The informed consumer should be free to make their own choices based on their own criteria.
I will admit the following:
Do I know the detailed internal characteristics of various oil filters? No. Can I guarantee that a premium non-Saab filter will result in equal or longer engine life than the Saab branded filter? No. Is there absolutly clear criteria for comparing filters side-by-side and declaring which are superior? Not really, because the maufcaturers publish what they chose.
However, I think the evidence is pretty clear that there are different grades of filters that will provide different levels of performance in terms of capacity, flow, and durability. Assuming it is correct that the Saab branded filter is the same as the ACDelco "Duraguard", then you only have to look at ACDelco's product line for evidence. Why would they bother to produce the "Ultraguard" filter unless it offered some benefit over the Duraguard. There is probably a higher profit margin, but IMHO I doubt that it is pure fluff. Subjective analysis reveals higher quality materials and greater attention to detail. Empirical tests show better flow and filtration characteristics. I personally am willing to gamble that there is some benefit.
