The newest issue of European Car has an article about their hot-rod turbocharged M3. They were running into severe power loss at high rpm due to detonation, so they tried some tests with 104 octane race gas. The dyno graph was _much_ smoother all the way up, and at 13 psi (the boost setting that had been giving them problems) they recorded an increase of 50 wheel hp over premium grade fuel.
Higher octane is good when you are pushing the edge of the engine's power envelope, and you have computer that can compensate for the octane increase.
