unlit steering wheel buttons and unlit dashboard buttons are two completely different things. I have never said that dash buttons should be unlit. Quite the opposite. If I am taking my hand off the wheel, I want to find the button in the quickest time possible and get it back on the wheel. I'm going to probably have to look for it, hence it should be lighted. The steering wheel buttons are unlit because you don't have to take your hands off the wheel, just slide them down a little and feel for the buttons. You also shouldn't need to look down at them. If you can't memorize two rocker switches and two others then you have a bigger problem than lighted switches. The reason for steering wheel controls isn't just being too lazy to move your hand over to the dash, it's a safety feature to keep your eyes on the road longer. If it were to be lazy, they would have packed it full of every function imaginable, so you would have to look at it to differentiate between things. Only having the radio makes it simple and easy to remember.
If you listen to the audio CD they give you with the car, it explains the layout of the center console in terms of how often you use the function. You don't usually change the climate functions constantly, so they are further down than the radio. The radio functions are up high and also on the wheel because most people change stations more often than they change the climate control.
