Old fluid gets moisture contamination. But that does not make the fluid compressible. Moisture can cause vapor problems when the calipers get very hot - not the current problem.
Pumping the brake petal to the floor may have cut the master cylinder cup seals as they stroked over rust deposits that form on un-swept extremes of the cylinder. Never push the petal to the floor. Putting a short piece of 2x4 behind the petal can act as a safe guard. More a issue with older vehicles.
