Do a search on this bulletin board for "performance upgrades." I have a 9-5 with the same 4 cylinder and it seems you have these options:
1. Sport Exhaust-which you know $400-$500
2. K&N Air Filter-possible 3-5 hp. probably less, some posters claim the ECU compensates for the increased airflow. This is cheap upgrade though, so give it a try. $50-$100
3. You can send your ECU (Engine Control Unit) out to Hirsch, Abbott or Nordic tuners and they can boost the horsepower by reprogramming it. You'll get 40 hp.+ increase but will probably void your warranty and will have to live with a brainless engine (non-running vehicle) for a couple of weeks and have a SAAB tech reinstall it. Hirsch has just entered into an agreement with SAAB as their exclusive performance tuner so I hope they will come out with an upgrade for our engines that will also be covered under warranty. I think $500-$1000.
4. Check out http://www.hirsch.ch or a saab dealer called Wigwam Saab in Providence, RI they do Nordic tuning for the United States.
hope this helps.
