You need to put lateral force on the wheel. Either the rocking side to side or maybe even the jacking trick I described in an earlier post.
You need to get a LOT of sideways force on the wheel--as in hundreds of pounds. Hitting it with a hammer just won't deliver enough force.
BTW, if you remove the whole wheel/hub assembly, how are you going to separate the wheel once it's off the car?
