both headlights out, new bulbs don't fix it

I found both headlights out on my 2000 9-5. I know both were working a day or two before, and the bulbs are not especially old. I replaced the bulbs, finding that both connectors showed evidence of heating, were brittle, and fell apart. The new bulbs did not fix my problem, so I have a daytime-only car for the moment.
The high beams on the car have been inop for some time.
Any ideas? I've seen a post about checking the wires behind the throttle body. Except for the switch, what do both lights have in common?
Another electrical issue is probably unrelated, but here it is: the passenger seat heat was getting very hot, and not shutting off. I pulled the fuse for that a few days ago, before the issue with the lights. The owner's manual does not show anything else powered on that circuit. (I'm not worried about the seat heat right now; I just want the lights to work).
Thanks for any input.
Tom
