You can do anything but do it good so that it is worth your time and money spent on the parts is another question.
I have a pretty good heavy duty crimp pliers for some battery cable repairs but would not even try to build a Saab cable for a 9-5 from battery and AUX fuse box to starter to alternator (especially 02 and up).
The labor involved would be more for the customer than the cost of the cable and I could still not be sure that it would be as good as the genuine cable and hopefully the new one is better than what was on from factory.
But we also don't know if the factory cable maybe are getting hammered because the batteries are not replaced often enough making the alternator putting out more amps that it really need to trying to charge a marginal battery.
If it only was enough slack in the cable between starter lug and alternator lug, I wouldn't mind trying to cut and splice a new alternator lug on the cable to try with but it is just not enough material.
