I know what the manual says, but even my '01 9-5 Aero delivers a much better driving experience with high test fuel. Compared to even the 89 octane, 2-3 mpg more, much better acceleration when called on. The difference between 87 and 93 octanes (I buy Sunoco) is currently about 17 cents per gallon. So, on a typical 15-gallon fill-up, about $2.55
I only refill the tank about twice per month, so the difference between the grades is about $5 - not very much. At 25 mpg average in town and 33-36 mpg highway, my '01 is still pretty frugal when it comes to fuel consumption. I don't think the new 9-5 even approaches that kind of mileage, given its extra weight.
I saw my first new 9-5 the other day in the parking lot of a big box store. It seemed absolutely enormous compared to my 9-5...
