I also use Costco gas (in VA) and mostly use the car for commuting 21 miles to and from work. 6 miles of the trip is stop and go with lights / stop signs and the rest is on I-95 at around 65 mph. My V6 (MY2000 9-5 SE - 113+K) averages 23-24 MPG under those conditions and around 22 mpg in Winter. Almost always let the AC run in Auto mode. If on a long trip of a few hundred miles, it gets around 29 mpg or so at highway speeds. I've run it on 87 octane in the past and it did about the same; the brand of gas has never been an issue with it, but I stick with mostly Exxon or Costco. Engine performance with the regular is *noticably* less than with premium.
There is most likely something else going on in your engine. I'm not so sure I'd want to chance additives in the coolant and hope it fixes it. Too much chance of clogging the cooling system and causing more headaches. Definitely needs to be on an OBD reader or Tech II, (but without a CEL, there may not be anything there, but the engine elctrical values can be read and evaluated).
