In just over 100K of ownership, there has been exactly one time that a non-tire failure forced me to the side of the road. On my Spring Migration from Florida to Ohio, with the dogs, birds, and Mrs. G in the car an the CV with all our luggage on a tow dolly behind.
Once I regained my wits and discovered the problem, I found all that I needed to repair the car and be on my way was included in the meager excuse for a tool kit that came with the car: a screwdriver to reinstall the air intake tube to the throttle body. Seems the mechanics hadn't quite tightened it enough when the replaced the dreaded heater bypass valve the month before, and (shame on me) the car hadn't seen full boost until the trip back North.
Moral: don't overthink the situation. A well maintained Saab is unlikely to leave you stranded. Even the DIC, on your car, will usually throw a code long before it's terminal, and the cps will usually show hot-restart problems well before it dies in the middle of an intersection.
