I had to remove the front door panel of my 9^5 yesterday (the reason is another horror story, but that's a different topic). To remove the pulls you will definitely need to take the panel off. To take the front door panel off:
1. Remove the (plastic) trim that covers the perimeter of the door window prying it gently off.
2. Unscrew 3 bolts: two for the door pull and one holding the door opening handle.
3. The panel is hold by the array of delicate pins alongside the perimeter. Pry gently. Move the panel up to release it from the upper edge (that was the hardest part in my case).
