This weekend we had some pretty brutal driving conditions - slick, cold (-15C (0F) or so) and ~15 cm of new snow (I live in Calgary, Alberta). Perfect conditions to compare our two vehicles - a 2004 9-5 aero sportcombi (Manual with Conti winters) and 2004 XC90 2.5T AWD (with Gislaved winters). The difference between the two was very striking.
The Volvo's stability control was kicking in all the time - on the highway, in corners etc and seemed to be the only thing preventing it from sliding around and being a handful. The Saab on the other hand was solid and much more predictable, and I never felt the stability control kick in.
The Saab is now our first choice going to the mountains - on the way to skiing at Lake Louise we saw 10+ cars (90% of the time pickup trucks or SUVs) in the ditch - and the Saab felt solid and predictable the whole way. Never mind that the Volvo gets 50% worse gas mileage!
The difference is so striking that I'm planning on selling the Volvo. This surprised me as I thought a car-based SUV with AWD and stability control would have been better (we bought it last year for it's 7 passenger abilities, and because it was rated as such a safe vehicle - we have 2 kids under 4).
I'm interested if other people have had similar experiences with Saabs vs other supposedly "winter capable" vehicles?
