I experienced failure of the Warranty Supplied IDM Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 18:20:35 In Reply to: (Recommendations??) The IDM in my old 9-5 was replaced circa 2005 as result of the special Saab Warranty. IIRC I had 170K miles on the car at that time and I had previously replaced the factory IDM at the 80K mark. Both the factory unit and the second unit were operating properly at their respective times of replacement. Last Fall, at around 310K miles, the unit suppplied 6 years earlier with the warranty started to hiccup when restarting hot and illuminated the CEL. The CEL was the only symptom.
So the new and improved IDMs have a finite life too, mine went bad around 140K miles. The good news is the new IDM units (and new engine software) give you warning the end is approaching. I was able to order a Saab unit and wait for delivery with no loss of car use.
