Sure it's a downshift?

One characteristic of Trionic 7 is it keeps the throttle open some when you lift the accelerator, keeping some flow through the turbocharger to shorten the lag time if you decide to accelerate. When you apply the brakes, even just a little bit, it throws that strategy out the window (on the assumption that, yeah, you really mean to slow down, not just pause and then accelerate) and shuts the throttle. The feel of the car is that first it just coasts, but then there is engine braking to go along with the actual brakes.
Since you have an '03, try putting the car into manual mode, then lift throttle and then tap the brakes lightly. So long as you are at speed, the trans should stay locked in 5th (b/c the car is in manual mode). If the feel is the same, then that's your answer. IF the feel is substantially different - i.e., the transmission *is* downshifting, then yeah, you may have an issue.
BTW, the car isn't in "sport" mode, is it? (Does the '03 on even have a sport mode?)
