Inner axel replacement hard?

My 2004 ARC (5 sd auto)has a slight shudder when under a load at various levels of accelleration. I am unsure what the last owner used when the last fluid change was done. I have some Mobile 3309 on order, and will hope that may be the issue. If not, How does one check for a bad axel. Are they hard to replace (my son and I are pretty experienced with Saabs), but have not had to deal with axels in the 6 Saabs we have had.
