I had the DIC completely fail in my 2002, with the car only 1.5 yrs old, <20k miles. It seems like the software changes since 2004 (or so) have eliminated that, now everyone appears to get plenty of warning of failure.
That being the case, carrying one every day in the trunk doesn't seem to gain you anything.
If you're planning cross-country trip, and carry "failing" spare, and you get codes indicating the one you're presently driving with is having problems, at what point to you switch? I guess you could continue to drive until it completely fails, stranding you potentially in traffic, with ruined catalytic converter, then switch?
Perhaps you could continue to drive on CEL, wait until some stumbling of engine, then switch?
I currently have the "failing" DIC from son's Aero, plus the "new, Chinese?" one I bought on eBay that I tried in his car and found bad within a week (but couldn't get refund). I can't see either of us carrying one of these in the trunk everyday.
