24" breaker bar is too small! Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 09:23:27 In Reply to: on the subject of tire changes, timbrown, Wed, 25 Apr 2012 15:56:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a few twisted remains of 24" breaker bars from changing tires where someone else put the bolts in! Seriously! I don't think it is even just the use of air guns, but that's a big part of it. Make sure there is no antisieze on the threads. That happened to me once - a shop put antisieze on each bolt then waaay overtightened (none of this to our knowledge) and left like that for months... 5' of pipe on a 24" breaker bar with one of us holding the socket on and the other guy jumping on the pipe... just bent the breaker bar! took it to a tire place + 2 guys there eventually got the wheels off after an hour of work!!
I now own a 4' long inch thick 3/4" drive breaker. My indy's is even bigger. Tools like that will crack just about anything...
I now make a habit of loosening + retorquing all the wheel bolts by hand every time anyone touches one of our cars... never had a problem since ;-)...
