I haven't been on the board much but I still have the 2000 Aero and it's way up over 200K now. I'm getting a whine while running, dependent on engine speed.

But many of the usual accessory suspects are not in play:

I did the top idler 3 months ago (I replace it every 2 years in the fall).
The whole tensioner assembly is less than 2 years old.
I did the water pump last month because I was losing coolant and it had just started to grind.
It got warm enough to light up the AC and the noise didn't change under load.
Power steering noises are the same but I've never had one go so I don't know what sound, if any, they make.

The thing with the alternator is, I've had three units go in these cars and they all made exactly the same noises, and this is different. Plus, it's also only 3 years old. Any more ideas where to look?
