Wow, I just typed up a very lengthy and detailed reply and somehow got the "posting restricted" message from the board. I have no idea why.
I'll try one more time.
The main issue is that simply getting to the HC won't really solve the problem. The blockage is in one of the pipes prior to the HC. So just getting AT the HC would only offer minimal advantage. Sure, in theory I could then connect more hoses inside the car as well as in the engine bay to do a more focused flush, but that sounds pretty involved.
If I understand SWEDCAR's advice, I can in fact disconnect the relevant hoses (eg., the ones you would disconnect if you were replacing the HC anyhow) and instead of blowing compressed air through, I can pump water / coolant through.
My question here is, will the heater bypass valve prohibit me from doing this properly? I get the sense from SWEDECAR's post that the answer is yes. In order to really be able to backflush, I need to disconnect the bypass valve. That kind of makes sense since I'm guessing the valve starts out in the closed state, thus preventing flow from going in either direction.
