Torque Converter Questions

2002 9-5 Auto Linear, indications really point to a bad torque converter. No OBDII codes, but during this process TCS Off light will come on, but is gone when car is re-started. Car will chug along at first then drives perfectly once you get to speed in upper gears, then you can stop and start a couple of times, but soon the car will get to where the engine will rev extremely high without engaging. I had to drive in reverse (which worked moderately) back home into my driveway and garage. PO neglected the fluid and I have been doing partial drain and fills (apx 10 times now) to get all good Toyota T-IV fluid. The last time I was at the Dealer, I had them update the transmission software simply because there was an update available. This problem started after, but not _immediately_ after this update.
1- No codes using an OBDII scanner, but can a TechII narrow down the problem and separate it out if it is Torque Converter or Transmission or other?
2- Can the torque converter be removed alone despite WIS saying the whole transmission has to come out? I would have ramps, jacks, jack stands, and an engine brace if needed.
3- If the Torque Converter can be removed, I understand it can be replaced, but can it be inspected without further damage if I wanted to see visually what the problem was?
I hope there is a transmission wiz out there. Thanks- JerryC
