I didn't see anyone mention it, but I thought that lack of tachometer movement (or erratic movement) while cranking (but no start) was the definitive symptom?
A coworker with 2001 9-5 was having problems getting started, I told him of that test, even went out in parking lot to confirm "proper" tach behavior. Pulled connector off my DIC, cranked and watched the tach (maybe 700+ rpm) needle. He went home, said his tach didn't move. He ordered CPS, installed, still no start. It turned out to be the fuel pump. I don't know how he "messed up" the tach observation.
