Don’t worry about the Infinity G35

After the Road&Track article rating the Infinity G35 #1 (see posts below) I drove & priced one today.
SAAB shouldn’t be worried.
•The G35s a 2003 model, the 2003 SAAB should be even tidier than the present 9-5 Aero
•When comparably equipped e.g. heated seats, moon roof, sports package, aero pkg, etc the real prices are very close ( ca $1200-1600 out the door) there is no On-Star equivalent
•ingress & egress are poorer in the G35. I nearly couldn’t get my size 12s out of the back seat
•the front seat is slippery & the seat cushion is rather short
• the only tranny is an auto 4 speed.
•driver ergonomics are inferior: the tach (on an auto-only car) is as big as the speedo. the speedo has 80 mph @ 12 o’clock resulting in inadequate distance for typical needle travel (form over function); the radio controls are nearly blocked by the shifter; different power seat controls are on both sides of the driver’s cushion; the steering wheel tilts but doesn’t telescope; the side mirrors are small
•no SID-like on-board computer. the G35 has a neat DVD-based navigation system but it’s $2,000 and the DVD takes up a big part of the glove box area. It does have a compass.
•no refrigerated glove box!
•EPA gas mileage is 19 & 26, significantly less than the Aero
•Most important- while the G35 leaps across the intersection, acceleration after 25 mph is underwhelming compared to my 2000 Aero. While no “turbo lag,” there is a noticeable lag of some origin when the accelerator is swatted
•the G35 brakes just don’t feel as studly as the Aero. The parking brake is a pedal.
• the trunk volume is not as useful, nor as tidy
• the G-35 warranty is marginally better
•the rear drive set-up seemed no better at tracking or turning in when driven on the same road as the Aero.
Overall, I don’t see the G 35 as a credible threat to the Aero, despite how the R&T editors rated
