Deciding on A/C Replacement

Hi All -- 00 Aero, 200K+, and the A/C compressor is making bad bearing noises....it sounds just like a bad alternator, I confirmed it with a stethoscope after I changed the PS fluid hoping I'd get lucky. (Plus the alternator is only 7 months old...)
This is what confuses me...it makes the noise all of the time regardless of it being on or off. But the stethoscope very definitely points there. The A/C works great, the clutch does its thing (and actually appears to make it own, separate bearing noise when disengaged)...
Is this a case where just the clutch bearing is bad (as I read in the archive here)? The rest of it isn't supposed to turn when it's off...or am I missing something obvious?
