The drain plug is the preferred method, as this will carry more "gunk" out of the case than siphoning can.
Make sure you have the correct fluid. The 5-speed Aisin takes a completely different fluid than the 4-speed (1998-2001) does. Don't mix them, and don't believe any claims about a "universal" transmission fluid. The Owner's manual states:
"Saab 3309 automatic transmission fluid (mineral oil-based)"
Now, you don't need to source the Saab fluid, but you must pay attention to the "3309" and the "mineral oil-based" parts. DO NOT use a synthetic!
