Good for you.
A 9-5 isn't the best car to own if you're not going to do all the regular maintenance on it. She might be better off with a Honda...
When this happened to me in my 9000 (due to me not preventatively changing the belt tensioner), I was able to drive the 4 or 5 miles home by putting a bungee cord around the crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley. Didn't worry about the lack of power steering, a/c or alternator for that short trip!
