Oil oil everywhere

Hi All, it's been awhile -- big problem tonight...
2000 Aero -- Oil everywhere on the timing cover, belt, accessories, idlers, frame, you name it, there's oil there and probably a good half pint or more under the car that dripped off after I parked it.
I did the top idler about 2 weeks ago and probably would have noticed this hot mess, so it's kind of sudden.
It had been weeping at the standard spot near the chain tensioner, only enough to get stuff fuzzy but still rate pretty low on the priority list -- I had retorqued the bolts several years ago and posted here at the time so I don't think it's that, at least not in this volume.
The PCV check valve is new and in the right direction. PCV6 is in there and the hoses look ok.
I'm leaning towards water pump vs timing cover except there's just not that much oil in the vicinity of the water pump, nor does the edge of the pulley look like it's been digging into anything. I do have to check it for play..and if push comes to shove I do have a new one on hand. But I hate hate hate that job.
Does the tensioner seal eventually just give up, or does it just weep? Anything I may have missed?
Thanks -- FSik
